Adrian Amos Commits

by Mike Grant on September 2, 2010

The Huskies have reeled in their ninth commitment for the 2011 class and the latest addition is a big one.  Adrian Amos, a 6’0″ 195 lb defensive back from Towson, MD chose the Huskies over West Virginia and Temple.  It’s not every day the Huskies go head to head with the Mountaineers for a recruit and win, so this is a noteworthy addition.

Huskies to Face Inexperienced Secondary in Ann Arbor

by Mike Grant on September 1, 2010

The Michigan secondary has a had a tough off-season.  Starting senior cornerback Troy Woolfolk broke his leg recently, highly regarded Sophomore defensive back JT Turner transferred, and incoming recruit Demar Dorsey, who chose the Wolverines over everyone, was not admitted to the University.  The series of events has left Michigan with a thin and inexperienced secondary for the opener vs UConn on September 4th.

Kovacs was second on the team with 75 tackles

The most experienced of the group is former walk-on safety Jordan Kovacs (RS Soph.), who played in 12 games last season and made eight starts.  He was second on the team with 75 tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and one interception.  Kovacs was named to the Sporting News’ Freshman All-Big Ten team.

RS Freshman Cam Gordon, who transitioned from WR to safety this spring, will get the nod at FS.  Gordon was recognized as the Wolverines’ “Break-out” player at the Spring game.  Reports from the game said Gordon looked comfortable in his new digs, and although he didn’t stand out defensively, he didn’t get burned either.  Gordon spoke about the transition and his performance after the game : “I feel like I transitioned over to a new position in a good way,” Gordon said. “Playing offense last year, that’s where I wanted to stay at, but I felt like I had to help the team. I did good in the spring ball, could have been better. Still got things to learn, hopefully when camp come along with more practices I can keep on moving forward.”

Defensive Coordinator Greg Robinson says Floyd has been working hard

RS Sophomore JT Floyd, who has just two career starts and 17 tackles, will get the start at corner.   Floyd has been thrust into the starting roll due to the injury to Woolfolk.  Former Syracuse head coach and now Michigan Defensive coordinator had high praise for Floyd when asked about his progress recently : “J.T. Floyd may have been the guy that made the biggest jump from last season to the end of spring ball in so many ways,” Robinson said.  “There’s nothing any different – he’s just worked really hard. J.T. just has a way about him – he leads well and his work habits – he’s just a harder worker than he was at this time last year.”

Senior James Rogers, who has endured multiple position changes  throughout his career, will get his first career start at corner.  Rogers has amassed just 15 tackles over his first three seasons, all on special teams.

If the Huskies are unable to get the ground game going, you have to believe Joe Moorhead, Zach Frazer and the receiving corps will be able to point some points up through the air.    The Huskies’ secondary is not a whole lot more experienced than Michigan’s, so the possibility of a shoot-out on Saturday is very much in play.
