Checking in on Yawin Smallwood

in UConn Football Recruits

Yawin Smallwood, the 6’4″ 225 lb outside linebacker who committed in July, is having a solid senior season.   Smallwood has excelled at both offense and defense for Doherty Memorial High School (Worcester, MA).  He’s rushed 95 times for 765 yards (8.1 ypc) and 10 touchdowns.  On the defensive end he’s made 71 tackles (8.9 per game) and added 5 sacks.   As a junior Smallwood made 79 tackles, and posted 3 sacks…while rushing for 646 yards on 80 carries (8.1 ypc).

He has a long lean body, and has the look of a kid who could play some defensive end as well.  Smallwood reportedly runs a 4.6 forty, excellent speed for a kid his size.  He’s a little raw…but he has moved around a ton…he’s played QB, RB, safety, LB…Once he settles in and focuses all of his efforts on one position, I think he can become a real force.  A good solid tackling linebacker, who will excel in pass coverage as well.   Yawin mentioned the staff told him he was being brought in to play “Husky” Linebacker..sort of a LB/Safety hybrid…that role is currently manned by junior Captain Scott Lutrus.

Smallwood garnered interest from Boston College, Rutgers, Maryland, Duke, Syracuse, Tulane, Vanderbilt, URI, UNH, and UMass.
