UConn Harvard post game : Huskies squeak by Harvard, 79-73

Good thing I can’t be put in a bad mood today…not after the Huskies last second win over South Florida last night, and the subsequent invitation to a bowl game vs SEC member South Carolina.  Not today.  Maybe that’s it?  Maybe the basketball team was up late watching the football team’s heroics?

It started well enough..a Jerome Dyson lay up with 5:55 left in the first half put the Huskies up 33-17…timeout Harvard…just another Sunday afternoon laugher…or not.

From that moment on the Huskies were outscored 56-46.  Outscored for over 26 minutes by Harvard…

The Good : Four Huskies in double figures…Stanley Robinson scored 18 on 7/15 shooting, Kemba Walker had 20 on 6/9, Gavin Edwards had 12 on 3/5, and lastly, Jerome Dyson led the way with 24 point on 8/24 shooting.  About that 8/24 shooting…I wasn’t crazy about the way Dyson played today.  He took a ton of shots, and missed a good portion of them.  Some were out of control, some were too early in the possession…I don’t kow, it just wasn’t my favorite performance.  He did have 9 assists.

The block party continues, 13 more in this one…Edwards had 6 of those himself.

The Bad : Defense.  Harvard shot 41.8 % for the game.  We just aren’t used to allowing that type of number…Aside from the blocks, I thought Harvard was able to most of what it wanted…

The Ugly : The Bench  (Again, I am not including Gavin Edwards’ points as bench points).  Charles Okwandu led all bench scorers with…wait for it…2 points. His bucket was the only field goal by a reserve.  What’s worse than that?  He scored 59 seconds into the game…no one outside of Dyson, Walker, Robinson or Edwards scored a bucket in the final 39 minutes.  Yikes.

Alex Oriakhi had a tough day as well…one point, 5 rebounds, 4 fouls.

It looked to me like once the Huskies got up 33-17, they took their foot off the gas.  I never got the feeling the Huskies were going to lose, but I wasn’t thrilled with the effort.  Eh…a win is a win, and with the big one vs Kentucky looming on Wednesday, maybe the Huskies did a little bit of looking ahead.

Next Up : vs Kentucky, Madison Square Garden Wednesday December 9th, 9:30 PM ET

Better not bring that same game against Kentucky.

Did not realize it is back to the Garden. Is it part of a bigger event or did they just decide to do it on neutral court in NYC?

It’s part of the Big East – SEC Challenge
UConn teams have a knack for playing down to their competition…I’m hoping it’s just another case of that, and we’ll get a big effort Wednesday.
