The Moorhead Effect

by Mike Grant on December 7, 2009

in UConn Football

First year Offensive Coordinator Joe Moorhead had a tall order taking over one the country’s worst passing offenses.  I’m not sure anyone thought it could be turned around so quickly, but that’s exactly what he’s done.   The Huskies’ offense  has improved nearly across the board, losing ground in only rushing yards per game.

Lets look at the numbers…the 2008 stats do not include UConn’s 38-20 International Bowl victory, a straight 12 game regular season comparison :

Offensive  2008 2009
Category Total/ Nat’l Rank / BE Total/ Nat’l Rank / BE

Total 351.83 / 68 / 7 398.42 / 47 / 3

Passing 147.25 / 105 / 6 225.67 / 46 / 2

Rushing 204.58 / 20 / 2 172.75 / 41 / 3

Scoring 23.83 / 77 / 7 32.08 / 23 / 3

3rd Down % 34% 40%

Rushing TD’s 24 29

Passing TD’s 4 15

Remarkable…

Wow. The difference in scoring touchdowns and passing is incredible.
Great breakdown Mike.

Thanks phop. The man knows how to coach an offense. Here’s something to chew on…

Cody Endres 2009 passing yards – 1354
Zac Frazer 2009 passing yards – 1354

I think Moorhead is comfortable with either, or…which is great news for the Huskies.

Engineered similar turnaround at Akron between ’07 & ’08. Great fit for the program.
