Papajohns.com Bowl Preview : South Carolina’s Stephen Garcia

by Mike Grant on December 15, 2009

Lets take a look at what the Huskies’ defense is up against in January 2nd’s showdown with South Carolina, shall we?

The Gamecocks are led by Sophomore Quarterback Stephen Garcia.  Garcia had a big year, his first as the full time starter.  He threw for 2,733 yards and 17 touchdowns, on 223 of 394 passing (56.6%).   He ranked second in the SEC in passing yards, and first in completions.  Garcia was careful with ball, throwing just 9 interceptions, and only throwing two in a game once this season…vs Florida.

He threw for 300 yards 4 times this year, Georgia 313, Vanderbilt 312, Tennessee 300,  and a season high 327 vs Arkansas.

He is not afraid to tuck it and run, either.  Garcia carried the ball 105 times for 130 yards and 4 touchdowns.   Sacks count against the quarterback’s rushing statistics, so don’t let the 130 yards fool you…he actually rushed for 372 yards.

If there has been a bugaboo for Garcia, it has been the sack.  He was sacked a league worst 34 times.

He was the number 4 ranked dual threat quarterback coming out of high school according to Rivals.com, running the 40 in 4.65 seconds.

Garcia had scholarship offers to play at Auburn, Boston College, Florida, Louisville, Mississippi, NC State, and Oklahoma, to name a few…impressive.

Where is black magic?

Dying for a follow up on these:

1) “Dude, honestly, if we were in the Big East right now………we’d most likely be in the BCS bowl game.”

2) You have no defense to stop our offense.

Uhhh yeah….

I was at the game in Birmingham and would like to congratulate your team for a fine performance against my alma mater. Your team came to play, mine didn’t. I could tell by the Huskies’ inspired performance that they wanted to be there, whereas Carolina wished they were in a “better” bowl in a better location (myself included). I do think the cold weather played to UConn’s advantage, whereas we tend to play in weather above 65 degrees! Enjoy the victory. It should definitely help in your recruiting efforts during the off season.

With kind regards, -SG.

Well, I am a man of my word…….and I know how to eat my crow and like it…….this isn’t the first time, nor do I think it will be the last.

Congrats to the UCONN Huskies!

They showed up and played a great game. They clearly wanted this win. The players played like they were in the Super Bowl.

For my Gamecocks….

I dunno. Looks like they were still strolling around celebrating the Clemson win and forgot to pack their cleats. O-line went back to their sorry old ways of terrible blocking. And we couldn’t get a single WR to hang onto a pass. Drop after drop after drop.

No excuses though….enough of that. It is what it is.

Congrats again to you guys and your team, you surprised the hell outta me.

Now you’ll have to excuse me as my crow is about well done on the grill.

Good Luck to you, your fans and team in the future. :)

Congrats guys, I hate to see my boys lose this game, especially the way we did, but your team earned it.

Looking forward to playing you guys again sometime in the future, maybe for a little revenge, haha.

Good luck next year fella’s.

Agreed.

I’ve been to pro games and it just doesn’t compare to the energy and atmosphere of college, not to mention that college players play with so much more heart.

Me and my family go to Williams Brice every year and we almost couldn’t pay for the tickets next year due to my father being laid off from work. Thankfully he was able to get his job back, and even though football isn’t the most important thing in life I am thankful we will be able to continue to make the games. They are definitely something our family can go to and have fun together.

Once again, you guys played a hell of a game, and we just didn’t show up. Regardless I hope you guys have a great season next year, and I’ll probably pull for you guys most of the time. I’ve talked to a few UConn fans and had no idea most of you hated the ACC like we do, haha.

Thanks Chris, come by any time…I’ll be rooting for the Game Cocks from here on out as well. The ACC took yet another lump last night…Thank you Iowa, and thank you Kirk Ferentz (UConn Alum).

Good luck in 2010!
