Kenny Miles has rushed for 602 yards and a TD in 2009
We’ve already seen what Stephen Garcia can do through the air, lets take a look at the Gamecock ground game.
South Carolina’s leading rusher in 2009 is freshman Kenny Miles. Miles, at 5’9″ 183 lbs, isn’t a big back, but he’s shifty. He’s young, and gets caught going east and west sometimes, but he’s been productive for a freshman. He’s carried 111 times for 602 yards (5.4 ypc), and a touchdown.
What he hasn’t shown to date, is the ability to hit the home run. Miles’ longest gain of the year was a 26 yard scamper vs Kentucky.
Last time out, Miles had a career day vs Clemson, rushing 17 times for 114 yards. That marked the third time this season he reached the 100 yard mark, he also rushed for 100 yards even vs Kentucky, and 102 vs Vanderbilt.
Miles got a concussion vs Clemson, but was medically cleared on December 16th, for the upcoming bowl game.
Miles also had an offer from UCF.
5’11″ 224 lb back, Brian Maddox, will also see carries vs UConn. Maddox, a junior, has carried 100 times for 305 yards, and 5 touchdowns.
Maddox was used sparingly for most of the season, but has carried the ball 35 times over the past two games. He carried 17 times for 82 yards vs Florida, and 18 times for 44 yards vs Clemson. The 82 yards vs Florida was his season high. His season high in carries came in week one vs NC State, a 23 carry, 66 yard performance.
Maddox is more of the straight ahead power back, that South Carolina will ask to get the tough yards. He’s a strong kid, relying more on his power than his speed.
Maddox’s career has been a bit a of a disappointment thus far, he was a big time recruit. Now nearly through with his junior campaign, his career totals are just 138 carries for 440 yards, and 6 touchdowns.
He was the # 13 ranked rb in the nation coming out of high school, according to Rivals.com, who rated him 4 stars. He chose the Gamecocks over offers from Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Maryland, NC State, North Carolina and Virginia Tech, amongst others. That’s quite an offer sheet…

Jake-Expansion or a raid will have a much bigger affect on UConn than the result of this game. It might be hard for a fan of a team firmly entrenched in the richest and best conference with no fear of instability hurting their program to understand. We upgraded to D1A right when the big east was raided, we were forced to make the transition one year ahead of schedule, and many fans are understandably worried about what will become of the conference and program, and how that will affect the basketball programs as well. it’s becoming increasingly difficult to have a bigtime basketball without having a football team in a bcs conference.
Cas-
That guy did a nice job with that video, but most if not all of those uconn clips are from last year. Butler (#1) is now on the Patriots, Donald Brown (#34) is now on the Colts, and Lorenzen (#4) is now on the Jaguars practice squad (i think). Todman (#23) is a sophomore this year. That diving interception against UNC was (#6) Jasper Howard (RIP) from last year.

while i hope that the big ten does get a 12th and that will prb come from your conference, yall were able to add some very quality teams after vt, miami, and bc left, i think yall will rebound again with some more good teams
Jake, about the conference expansion thing…if it bleeds it leads, you know the deal. We’ve been raided before, so a lot of our fans have their ears perked up right now. No one wants to get caught off guard. It’s not that I blame them…For what it’s worth, I think it will be Missouri…not a team from the Big East. That’s my two cents.
I’ve gotten plenty of disagreement on the Miles east west thing, it appears I was wrong about that…
IF, and it’s a HUGE IF…as big as an if can be really…IF the Huskies can limit Garcia through the air, I like our chances. It’s going to take a Herculean effort from our inexperienced secondary…how often is the team you see in the Bowl game different than the one you see during the regular season? Often…from the Huskies’ standpoint, we are hoping the difference is in the secondary, and that they have worked it out…I like the Huskies chances to slow down the SC rushing attack…
uconn fans..that dude who made that stupid comment is ONE dude. lets put that to rest.
about the video clips being from last year, i think the guy did all he could. its not like uconn is on down south. ND was obviously the exception.
on the expansion talk. imo, and i know i am an outsider, i just dont see how your fb program gets its peter left out to dry. somebody is bound to pick up a team like yours. It might get some peeps pissed or whatnot but those guys can screw it.
We have lived through that bs. Carolina is just now, in the last 5 yrs been accepted as a full equal in the sec. We got totally firebombed when we joined. the mighty sec asking lowly sc to join. that all died down when we went to the cws 3 times, beat uk twice in one yr, winning an sec basketball title outright, won a track and field national championship, and in football have beaten almost every school, some like uga and ut, a good much for thier liking.
Thanks Cas, good stuff. I think the Big East will be fine…they are mulling adding, we need a ninth team…it would just be counter-productive to have the Big 12 take a team now, while we are considering which team to add to get to 9. Your thoughts on a good 9th team Cas? Maryland gets thrown around…and BC gets rehashed…those are obvious good fits, teams already ready to play BCS football (although MD is down)…thoughts on ECU? UCF? Memphis?
i would take ECU if i were yall, but UCF could be a big time program one day if they could steal some recruits from the big 3 down there
It’s really 4 now Chris, USF is getting some pretty good in state talent as well.
But I get your point…UCF, and their 52,000 students could indeed be a power one day. George O’Leary is a good football coach…you could see vs Rutgers, that there is still a decent disparity in talent between UCF and Big East level competition, though. Rutgers was bigger, stronger, and faster. It would be a rough first few years for UCF…
ECU may be BCS conference ready, they certainly have the wins to back that statement up.
mike, i see now. i was a bit lost on the big east problem. i apologize for my ignorance, i just dont keep up with the inner workings of that conference. the only thing i know about the big east is that you dont mess with them come bb season. i am not sold on the football part quite yet. do you have good fb teams? hell yes. Perenially? ehh, wont go that far. Tradition takes time to build. Sorta like the sec in basketball. Yes, we have UK, and Uf has won a couple NC in the last 10 yrs, but does anybody give the sec credibility when it comes to bb? i think not..we are a fb conference first and foremost..
btw. i dont see md and bc going to the big east. that is just dreaming. md has too many rivalriies, especially in basketball, to leave. of course, the acc gets twice the revenue to share wich is a factor. Bc is a wierd ass fit for the acc but they wont leave for the same money issues. Bc in the acc just seems odd. Maryland is north enough, bc is on another planet.
i do think East carolina would be a great fit for you guys. i know they are pretty far south but who gives a crap about c usa anyway..heck, the winner of cusa plays the 6 team in the sec come bowl time. East Carolina should jump at that offer. ucf and memphis are just too far south.
Cas, I think you are forgetting about USF? That’s pretty far South. Maryland’s relationship with the ACC is rumored to be on the fritz. They feel like most of the conference’s decision making is coming from Tobacco Road…something they are less than thrilled with…It’s worth keeping an eye on. Maryland also has a very nice inter-conference rivaly with West Virginia…
oh yeah, usf. who exactly is in your conference for football…lol,.uconn, syr, cincy, pitt, rut, usf, wv, louisville..i had to look up louisville..your conference keeps changing so much..you have like 16 for bb but only 8 for football..its a wonder anyone gets it right..here is a question..
can you honesty, off the top of your head, split the sec east and west?
I’ll try! East – Florida, Vandy, Kentucky, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee
West – Ole Miss, Miss State, Arkansas, Auburn, LSU, Alabama
btw, i dont see maryland leaving. if only for dollars..splitting 63 million among ten schools is better than 33 milliion among 8…i took those numbers off of an espn segment that had a breakdown of conferences..big ten spiits 252 million, sec 205, then it really drops from there..the bottom 2 were the acc and big east.
That is really the total bs in college football. since the courts ruled that the conferences could control tv coverages rather than the ncaa it has gotten out of whack. of course wiithout the ruling decision the top few schools would be rich, while all else would be broke. i guess it all goes to marketability.
example is the poppa johns bowls..the sec gets 900k and the big east gets less than half that..but it was signed by the big east in order to get exposure, hoping that it could be made up by splitting the pot evenly among schools.
i know sc gets around 3 million from bowl sharing and around 13 million from the tv contract..that is basically 16 million annually just because we are fortunate enough to be in the sec..
damn, that was good. haha..props. i know i look like a bonehead for not knowing the eight off the top of my head but i really am not.
btw, next year we play..auburn, alabama, fla, ga, tenn, arky, ky, vandy and clemsux..can we trade?
Come on Cas…Army can beat Vandy, Clemson can’t win a big game, Florida will be without the golden boy, Georgia forgot how to play defense, and Tennessee isn’t there yet, and who knows what’s going on there…Kiffin is caught up in some nonsense on the regular. Kentcucky is okay, where is that game? Bama will be tough, Arkansas will continue to improve under Petrino, and I like what I see from Auburn…it’s a brutal schedule, don’t get me wrong…but if Garcia continues to improve, and you can find a little more from the running game, you have a decent shot at the East. Losing Norwood hurts…
yeah, i hear ya..with sorry ass north carolina backing out of our game next year it allowed us to have an open date mid season….south miss home, uga home, furman home, auburn away, off week, alabama home, ky away, vandy away, tenn home, arky home, troy home, fla away, clemsux away.
getting Alabama at home is big…KY away eh…Vandy away, Tenn Home, Ark home, all favorable. Watch out for Troy! Going to the Swamp sucks, but who knows what we’ll see from Florida next year…
i think usc will have its run in 11′..next year we turn heads. i have been a carolina fan for a long long time and this is the first time EVER that i have total confidence we will win alot of big games. outsiders dont really grasp the talent that is on this team. it is crazy good talent. The proof is in the pudding though. you gotta win.
btw, when is your next article? dude, i know i can help ya with solid information that is totally unbiased. i dont wear garnt glasses..
I feel you forgot about Jarvis Giles, he is a big BIG time home run hitter, he dosent get a ton of carries but makes the most out of the ones he does get
Thanks Ryan…yes, he is sporting a solid 5.3 ypc…thanks for the heads up.
