UConn vs UCF Post game, Robinson erupts

It had been 11 days since the Huskies last outing, and it showed.  File this one under “not pretty, but we’ll take it”.  The Huskies came out flat, sloppy, rusty, and disinterested…but they turned it on in time to put UCF away, 60-51.

The defensive effort was there today, but the offense didn’t wake up until the second half, and truthfully, I’m not sure anyone besides Jerome Dyson or Stanley Robinson ever woke up.

Dyson scored 16 points, 10 of which came in the second half…he shot just 5-15 for the game, but was money from deep (4-6).

Robinson scored a game high 26 points, 23 of those coming in the second half.    I lost track of his dunks, alley-oops, and put back jams.  Stanley basically took over in the second half…good thing.

Kemba Walker scored 8 points on just 2 of 8 shooting, he did have 8 assists, though.  Defensively he was sound, he had two steals and he and Dyson bothered the UCF guards all day.  Both UCF guards, A.J. Rompza and Isaac Sosa, had miserable days.    Rompza went 1-8 for 2 points and 2 assists, and Sosa went 3-7  for 8 points and no assists.  Darius Smith was solid defensively in his limited time as well.

Ater Majok…16 minutes, 1 point, 3 rebounds.  Hey, he hadn’t played in a while…lets cut him a break.  He did seem to run the floor well, and have a nice little left handed dribble…hard to say much else.

Freshman Alex Oriakhi had his worst game as a Husky…24 minutes, 0 points, 2 rebounds, 5 fouls.  Maybe he’s not a morning person, I don’t know.  That was rough…

Gavin Edwards was barely used on the offensive end today…he took just one shot, at least he made it.  He was, however, the Huskies’ best rebounder today, he grabbed 11…and oh by the way…7 blocks.  7.

The Good : Besides the aforementioned Stanley Robinson, and the overall defensive effort…How about some three point shooting!  7-13 (53.8)…we needed it too.

The Bad : Out-rebounded. 36-34.

The Ugly : 61% foul shooting.  17-28.  Why does it seem like we haven’t shot well from the stripe in for ever?

Next up: The Maine Black Bears visit the XL Center, Tuesday night at 7pm.

Rusty after the long break. No disrespect to UCF. Jordan looked pretty solid. Where else was he recruited? Was he a top recruit?

Robinson took over in the second half eh? Someone will be able to make a sick highlight film at the end of the season.

What is there to say about Majok? I mean it is his first game but clearly we don’t instantly become a title contender simply because he shows up. Will be fun to watch the team evolve this year. Still like our chances for good run come March.

From Majok in response to Calhoun swearing at him and taking him out of the game:

“I take that as a motivation,” Majok said. “The more he cusses me out on the court, the more he yells at me, the more I know that he loves me and at the end of the day he wants me to be the best I can be.”

I get it, but it just sounds weird.
