Jamine Peterson is second in the Big East with 10.1 rebounds per game.

UConn at Providence, Wednesday January 27th, 7 PM ET – TV : WCTX, SNY

The Friars are having a rough year, even by Providence standards.  Non-Conference losses to Alabama, Boston College, Rhode Island and Iona, had the PC faithful worrying about the Big East schedule, and so far, their worries have been warranted. Providence is 3-4 in the Big East, but the three wins are over St. John’s, DePaul, and Rutgers.  They were blown out by Notre Dame (93-78),Marquette (93-63) and Louisville (92-70), and they recently blew a 12 point lead with 2:05 remaining to South Florida, losing 109-105 in overtime.

The Friars can score, they’re averaging 83.1 ppg, good for 4th in the Big East.

They can rebound, averaging 41.7 rpg, which is tops in the Big East (they are 11th in margin, +2.9).

So what’s the problem?  Defense. They can’t stop anyone.  They are allowing 78.5 ppg, which is dead last in the Big East, and teams are shooting .442 against them (15th).

They are tied for 2nd in the Big East with 151 made three pointers…they’ve taken a ton of them…454.

Providence is led by 6’6″ Sophomore forward, Jamine Peterson. Peterson, a Brooklyn native, is averaging 17.6 ppg and 10.1 rpg.  The 10.1 rebounds tie him with Georgetown’s Greg Monroe for second in the Big East.  Peterson has scored 20+ points 8 times this season, and had a ridiculous 29 points and 20 boards vs Rutgers.

Junior G/F Marshon Brooks is averaging 15.3 ppg, up from 10.6 a season ago. He is shooting .408 from three and leads the team with 31 made three pointers.  He’s coming off a 25 point performance vs USF, and has scored in double figures in16 of Providence’s 19 games.

Senior guard Sharaud Curry is having a solid year, averaging 14.8 points anda team high 3.9 assist.  He is second in the Big East in Free throw shooting percentage at .899.  He’s a career .361 three point shooter, but is struggling this year (.296).  He scored a season 26 points in the win over St. John’s.

Another Brooklyn kid, freshman Vincent Council, is contributing nicely.  He’s averaging 9 points and is second on the team in assist with a 3.7 per game average.  He scored a career high 24 points in the loss to Marquette.

Jamine Peterson is solid, and will  test the UConn frontcourt, and Providence is going to fire away from deep.  The Huskies have had their struggles with the Friars in recent years, losing three in a row before last year’s 94-61 blowout victory.   Providence can be a tough out at the Dunk, the Huskies must avoid the let down, coming off an emotional 88-74 win over the #1 ranked Texas Longhorns.

Defend. The. Perimeter.

Apparently the Huskies can face any team in the country and on any given night they can win or lose. Hard to find a more unpredictable team.

I no longer have any expectations. We beat TX on Saturday and 4 days later lose to an 11-8 Providence team by 15?!?!

One thing I do know, unless you are the lady Huskies ya don’t play any Big East, NCAA or NIT (ughhh) tourney games at home.

Don’t even want to dissect this one. They STUNK!

Went to my first game since being down in DC and watching them lose to George Mason three years ago. Almost got my ass kicked in because talking to much shit early on in the game drinking 7 dollar plastic Bud lights. As the comments were on Saturday after the game that the atmospere was fantastic at Home the away supporters were no where to be seen. On a side note I was telling a bunch of traveling kids from Stores to go back to Ted’s and if you see any of the players tell them to to get in the f-ing gym and put a better effort out there. The kids from UCONN pretty much said it was just a game. He was wearing a Hamilton Jersey on and probably does not know what year they won it or where he was when it happened. I thought Saturday would spring board us on a nice run but like pat ho said the expectations are not there. No leadership Dyson has 32 one night and goes 3-15 from the field after starting the game off with two three’s. NO heart from this team last night. I am going to watch the games at home because i might be a jinx.
