Me too George, me too...
Providence 81, UConn 66
The Huskies followed their best effort of the season, with their worst. This was as bad as the Huskies have played this season…just a sad, sad, effort.
Jerome Dyson was the main culprit tonight. He hit two threes in the first 2 and half minutes, and literally took the rest of the night off. He was 3-14 for the game, and really just didn’t seem to feel like driving against the zone. I can’t explain what I saw from Jerome tonight, but he was not himself. He finished the night with 12 points…He threw in 5 turnovers for good measure…
The Huskies were destroyed on the boards, 46-35. Alex Oriakhi had 8 rebounds, and could have had plenty more…he had a bout with the butter fingers this evening. The team’s best rebounder tonight? Kemba Walker…a clear indicator of trouble brewing.
Walker played well, and was probably the lone bright spot. He scored 17 points, grabbed 8 boards, had 7 assists and no turnovers. He just didn’t get enough help, particularly in the second half, from his teammates.
Gavin Edwards played well on the offensive end, scoring 17 points on 7-12 shooting, but didn’t do a great job on the boards (6), and was beaten repeatedly on defense.
Stanley Robinson was okay, he had the dropsies and made some lazy passes…turning it over 4 times. He scored 14 points on 7-16 but was ice cold from deep, going 0-5. Robinson grabbed just 4 rebounds.
Back to Alex Oriakhi, who was, I’m sorry to say, not good. He’s a freshman, so he gets a pass, but offensively he’s adding nothing. He had just 3 points in this one, and over the past 5 games is averaging just 3 points. 4 points vs Pitt, 4 vs Michigan, 2 vs St. John’s, 2 vs Texas, 3 vs Providence.
Ater Majok looked lost, too bad following a very good performance vs Texas. He did not score in 19 minutes, grabbed 2 rebounds, had 2 turnovers and blocked a shot.
How about some turnovers…19 of them. Remember, Kemba had none, which will tell you everything you need to know about how the rest of the team played.
The Huskies hit their first 2 threes, and then went 2-16 the rest of the way out. The Huskies clearly needed to dribble penetrate and kick, and they basically ignored it…content to sit back and miss threes over the zone…Yuck.
The Huskies have yet to win a true road game, certainly cause for concern at this point.
I was worried about a let down, and that’s exactly what we got. Let’s hope this embarassing loss reminds the boys that they aren’t good enough to take night’s off, let alone in the Big East, where they are now just 3-4.
Providence has beaten the Huskies 4 out of 5 times, it’s not just a coincidence. The Huskies need to understand that although Providence doesn’t mean much in the national landscape, it’s a big one, because they will always get Providence’s best effort.
Dang it.
Alright, let’s get off the mat, no rest for the weary…Marquette comes to town on Saturday. Gotta have it.
