I had a chance to catch up with UConn Defensive End Lindsey Witten, who is out in Indianapolis for the 2010 NFL Scouting Combine.  Lindsey and the rest of the defensive linemen are scheduled to be put through the rigors of the combine on Monday, March 1st.

Witten finished his UConn career with 22 career sacks, which is third in school history (since 1979), and his 11.5 sacks in 2009 were also good for third in school history (since 1973).  He led the Big East in sacks in ’09, and was 9th nationally.

MG: Have you spoken with Cody Brown at all about what to expect at the combine?  Or any other former Huskies?
LW: I have spoken with Cody and Julius (Williams), they both told me to relax, and compete like I always do.

MG : What are you hearing about your draft projections?
LW : I have not heard anything about projections.  I would rather just keep working and keep making progress…nothing in life is set in stone until it happens, so I just keep moving forward and hope for the best.

MG : You’re a Cleveland guy, I’m sure you’ll be happy wherever you land, but do you have a soft spot for the Browns?
LW : I love Cleveland, born and raised, and true enough it would be special to play for my hometown team but I grew up aspiring to play in the NFL, so any team I am blessed to play for would be a honor.

MG : What did you feel you had to work on the most entering this process, and how do you feel about what you’ve accomplished?
LW : I felt that I had room to improve in every area.  I worked out with that on my mind daily, and made progress.

MG : Marcus Campbell is back with the team, how excited about this should Husky fans be?  Do you think he’ll make an immediate impact?
LW: Yes, I am very excited for Marcus to add on to our returning defensive line, and defense.  Marcus is a good player who has been blessed with a second chance which I feel he will make the best of.  I spoke with Marcus and he’s also excited his second chance in the classroom, and on the field.

MG : Greg Lloyd is making the switch to Defensive End…have you spoken to him at all about the switch, and do you believe he’ll have a chance to succeed at that position?
LW : I have not spoken with Greg but I was around him last year as he played some defensive line and he made a difference there part time, and now he is there full time…he will steadily grow.

MG : How much mentoring did Cody Brown and Julius Williams offer to you?
LW: As much as I wanted and needed.  They have all been very available and open to questions… from Tyvon Branch, Darius Butler, Julius Williams and Cody Brown.

MG : What was the highlight of your career as a Husky?
LW: I would have to say beating Notre Dame for our first win since the losing my teammate Jasper Howard, and also the passing of running backs coach Terry Richardson’s Mom.  It was a feeling, and an accomplishment I will never forget!!  Love you Jazz .

Great piece. Seems like Lindsey really appreciates his experience as a Husky. We will be routing for him wherever he lands.
