I had a chance to catch up with USF blogger Ken DeCelles of VooDoo5 for a dueling Q&A. They got their blog name from an infamous play in their school’s history, which happened to have taken place at the Rent in 2005. A double reverse pass on 4th and goal in the waning moments…the Huskies stopped it en route to a 15-10 victory. Voodoo 5 was the play call…pretty cool.
Anyway, be sure to check out my answers to Ken’s questions here.
MG : Are you surprised by the strides USF has made in the relatively short
time since joining the Big East?
KD : Definitely. Everyone in Tampa knew that it was going to take some time
for USF to build a Big East caliber program, and everything is
starting to go in the right direction. Our facilities are finally
getting an upgrade with the new Muma Basketball Center. Coach Heath
has taken some chances when it comes to transfers, but the risks have
started to pay off. USF is playing relevant basketball in March for
the first time in a decade, and it looks like the Sun Dome might be a
sell-out for the first time since I’ve started following USF.
Hopefully the support continues, because God knows the program needs
it.
MG : How big has the addition of Jarrid Famous been?
KD : A big improvement has been the quality of play from our front line,
and Jarrid has been a huge part. He has slipped the past couple of
weeks, but I’m going to attribute that to being a new father.(I have a
3 month old, and I’m at about 36%) He does get bullied around by
stronger bigs, but he is extremely athletic, and can run the fast
break as good as anyone.
MG : What is the fanbase’s view of Stan Heath, and the job he’s doing at USF?
KD : Everyone knows that Coach Heath came basically starting from scratch.
He has had to go the JUCO and transfer route to get players here, but
it has worked out for the best. If he does get us in the NCAA
Tournament, he deserves to have a statue built in his glory in front
of the Sun Dome.
MG : What’s been the biggest issue or issues for USF in their losses?
KD : Lack of three-point shooting. We really don’t have anyone who can
shoot the ball consistently from deep. We do sit around on offense and
look at Jones go 5-1 everyone once in a while, but I hope that someone
can step up as a legitimate three-point specialist next season.
MG : Do you think Dominique Jones will jump to the NBA, and what does life
after Jones look like?
KD : From what he has told the press, anything less than a Sweet 16 run in
the tournament means that he will be back. Hopefully this is the case,
and I don’t want to live in a world where Dominique Jones doesn’t play
for USF.
