Meet 6’10″ 260 lb big man Jordan Williams, the pride of Torrington High School (CT). Williams starts at forward for Maryland, and is having a stellar freshman campaign. He’s averaging 9.6 points and 8.6 boards, and scored 21 points and grabbed 17 boards in Maryland’s first round win over Houston on Friday.

He was the Gatorade Player of the Year in state of Connecticut, and was named Player of the Year in state of Connecticut by the New Haven Register. He Averaged 35.7 points per game as a senior and ended his career as the all-time leader in Torrington HS and Naugatuck Valley League history. He Scored 2,228 points in his career and topped 1,000 points in his senior season. Williams finished 7th all-time in scoring in the state. His team won the state title in his freshman year and reached the final in 2009. He Scored 36 points (15-for-20 FG) with 13 boards and nine blocks in 2009 Connecticut Class L Final as Torrington lost 58-57. He was a three-time all-state and All-NVL selection. He holds school records for single-season points (36.0 ppg) and rebounds (20.0 rpg)… Single-game record was 52 points, accomplished three times, his senior year… Had another game with 50 points… Averaged 28 points, 16 rebounds as a junior.

His Uncle, Murray Williams, played at UConn from 1987 to 1991. Murray was on the 1988 NIT Championship team, and the was part of UConn’s first ever Big East Championship in 1990.

Williams is the second player from Connecticut, with UConn ties, to make a splash nationally this season…for another team.  Notre Dame’s Tim Abromaitis, who averaged 16.1 points and shot .429 from three, is the son of former UConn standout Jim Abromaitis.

Think UConn could have used a three point shooting specialist and another scoring option down low?
