Second Seeded Huskies Ready for Big East Tournament

QUICK HITS ON THE UCONN HUSKIES

• UConn enters the 2010 postseason with a record of 43-12 on the year and finished the regular season with a 20-6 mark in the BIG EAST Conference.

• The Huskies were edged by Louisville on the final day of the regular season as the Cardinals earned the No. 1 seed of the BIG EAST Baseball Championship by a half game.

• The Huskies will look for its third all-time BIG EAST Tournament title, having won the conference tournament in both 1990 and 1994.

• UConn’s 43 wins are the most produced by the program in a single season in the team’s 115-year history, surpassing the Huskies’ 39 victories in 2006.

• UConn put together a 22-game win streak earlier this season before dropping a 7-3 decision to Central Connecticut State University on April 28. Before the streak ended, it was the largest current win streak in the Nation, the Huskies’ best all-time and tied the second-best streak in Division I this season.

• UConn has knocked out 73 home runs this season, which is the most hit all-time by a UConn ball club in a single-season. The Huskies’ previous record was 69, which was set in 1997 (records date back to 1959).

UCONN RANKED AMONG BEST IN THE NATION

The 2010 UConn baseball team was ranked, as of May 17, in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Top-30 Poll (No. 19), the Rivals.com Top-25 Poll (No. 19) and Baseball America’s Top-25 Poll (No. 20). The USA TODAY/ESPN Coaches’ Poll has UConn ranked No. 19 in its latest poll, while the NCBWA has UConn at No. 18.

HUSKIES IN THE BIG EAST BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

This is UConn’s 12th appearance in the BIG EAST Baseball Championship, having made the postseason tournament five of the last six seasons.

The Huskies are 20-18 all-time in BIG EAST Championship play and have made the title game in both the 2007 and 2009 seasons. Last year, UConn defeated West Virginia 6-1 before eliminating South Florida from the tournament by defeating the Bulls in back-to-back games, 4-2 and 10-8. The Huskies then dropped an 11-3 decision to Louisville in the championship game.

GAME ONE COMPETITION

The Huskies will take on Cincinnati for the fourth time this season after winning the regular season series against the Bearcats 2-1 back on May 8-9.

Cincinnati enters the postseason with a 29-27 record after sweeping Georgetown to end the regular season. The Bearcats also finished the year with a 13-14 conference record.

UCONN SIDE NOTES

• UConn boasts a 3.87 ERA in 55 games and has struck out 343 batters and walked 160 en route to an 43-12 record during regular season play.

• Pierre LePage is considered the hardest player to strikeout in the nation, according to NCAA statistics. He has only struck out twice in 2010.

IN THE RECORD BOOKS

Mike Olt

After hitting three home runs against Seton Hall on May 20, Olt set a single-season record with 20 homers. He surpassed Brian Packin’s 19, recorded in 1999.
