Huskies to Host NCAA Regional in Norwich

So, the Huskies fell to St. John’s 3-0 on Sunday.  The offense could only muster 4 hits, none of which came in the same inning.  I’m not surprised, UConn left it all on the field Saturday night in order to reach Sunday’s final.   Game 2 vs Rutgers finished after midnight, and with the Final slated for a 12 noon start, I was worried about what the Huskies would have left in the tank.  Turned out to be not much, but that’s not meant to take anything away from the Johnnies.  They were fresh, crisp, and played better baseball. 

Now, the good news.  The Huskies have received an at large bid to the NCAA Tournament, and will indeed host a regional at Norwich’s Dodd Stadium.   Booyah.

STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut has been selected as one of 16 host institutions for the regional round of the 2010 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship. The games will be played at Senator Thomas J. Dodd Memorial Stadium in Norwich, Conn. – the 6,000 seat home of the Connecticut Tigers of the New York-Penn League.

The games will take place with two games on Friday, June 4, Saturday, June 5 and Sunday, June 6. A single-game will take place on Sunday, June 7, if necessary. The regional will be a four-team double elimination competition with the winner advancing to a super regional round on either June 11-13 or June 12-14. The eight super regional winners advance to the College World Series, which begins on June 19 in Omaha, Neb.

UConn will be one of the four teams to play in the Norwich Regional and the complete 64-team pairings for the NCAA tournament will be announced on the NCAA Baseball Selection Show on Monday at 12:30 p.m. on ESPN.

It is expected that Connecticut will play in the night game of Friday’s opening day.

Tickets for the Norwich Regional will go on sale on Monday at 2:00 p.m. at UConnHuskies.com. Tickets may be purchased in person at Dodd Stadium and at the UConn Athletic Ticket Office in Storrs beginning Tuesday morning.

A four-day ticket package, which includes up to seven games, is available for $28 while single-game prices are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and college students and $5 for youth 18 and under..

“The University of Connecticut is proud and excited to be hosting a NCAA baseball regional,” said UConn Director of Athletics Jeff Hathaway. “We have a rich baseball history at UConn and current head coach Jim Penders is continuing that tradition of excellence.

I encourage our loyal UConn supporters as well as baseball fans from around the state and region to join us in Norwich this upcoming weekend and watch the best in college baseball.

The Huskies have a record of 47-14 entering the NCAA tournament and will make its first appearance in the event since 1994. UConn has made a total of 15 NCAA tournaments with five trips to the College World Series. UConn advanced to the championship game of the BIG EAST tournament and finish second in the BIG EAST regular season by half a game.
