Harkless is ranked the #19 SF in the 2011 class by Scout.com
In case you haven’t already heard, 2011 recruit Maurice Harkless has decommitted. As I mentioned in the Niels Giffey commitment blurb, I found it a bit puzzling that the Huskies were stockpiling wings, and perhaps now we know why. Harkless tweeted today that he’s worried about possible NCAA sanctions on the way, so it’s quite possible that UConn was aware of Harkless’ wavering, and thus preemptively plugged the hole. It’s also possible that it’s the opposite, and the Giffey commitment caused Harkless to waver, because of what certainly appears to be a log-jam forming at the three.
Harkless’ decommitment hurts, but if Roscoe Smith is as advertised, the effect to the Huskies should be minimum, assuming Smith stays two to three years. And perhaps Niels Giffey isn’t just another late add-on for the end of the bench, after all some other major programs were believed to be in hot pursuit.
Jamal Coombs-McDaniel remains on the roster as a three, as well. He had a dissappointing freshman campaign and needs to improve, but showed enough flashes that the staff hasn’t given up on him yet.
Husky fans shouldn’t panic about this latest setback. Harkless may turn out to be a wonderful player, but the Huskies have mulitple options at the three, and let’s keep in mind Harkless could always recommit, as C.J. Leslie did with NC State recently.
