Jeff Adrien, a former Husky power forward, will be holding a camp at the Newtown Youth Academy in Newtown, CT from August 2nd – August 5th. The camp, open to players entering grades 9 through 12, is being tabbed as one of the best boys basketball camps in the area. The camp will include full court games, high energy stations, guest lectures and dinner served each night and is open to the first 100 players.
Kyle Lyddy, a former team manager for the Huskies who is helping lead Jeff’s camp management team, is excited to bring a guy like Jeff to his hometown.
“This area hasn’t really had a guy like Jeff come and run a camp,” Lyddy said. “This is an exciting opportunity to have high school basketball players come in and learn from a guy who played for one of the top programs in the country for four years.”
“Coach Calhoun has always described Jeff as a warrior. His day to day work ethic is what made him so successful as a college player,” Lyddy said who also in October released his self published book, From My Seat.
“Jeff wants to be able to instill that into each player at his camp and will be there each day to ensure he gets the most out of each one of them,” Lyddy concluded.
Jeff took the time to answer a few questions about his first year in Spain, his possible NBA future and his excitement towards his upcoming camp.
1) How was your first season in Spain? Explain the differences from college basketball at UConn to that in Spain?
Being in Spain for a year was a great learning experience. UConn and Spain are totally different – from the way we traveled to even playing on the court. As far as basketball, the game in the states is so much faster but it’s probably more physical in Spain.
2) What are your summer plans? Are you trying out for teams? Summer Leagues?
Right now I am currently in Los Angeles training for the NBA Summer League which starts in July. I’ll continue to train this summer to get ready to hopefully play for a team in the states next winter.
3) Are you excited about running a camp here in Connecticut? What does it mean to you?
I’m very excited to start a camp in Connecticut. For me to give back to a state that gave me so much support, it’s only right. I’m excited to be around to help Connecticut’s future stars. And when I say stars I don’t only mean basketball – there are so many other ways of being a star, and it starts in the classroom.
I want these kids to learn how to work hard on and off the court. I want them to know that nothing in life is given to them and that they have to earn everything. One thing I would like to have each player do is to learn 1-3 drills at my camp, and to go home and practice them and get better.
This four day camp will be a unique experience as I’ll be around each day to share what I learned and help these kids get better.
4) Just give us a little background on what it means to play for Coach Calhoun and for the Husky program? Now, especially as an alumni, looking back.
It was an honor to play for coach Calhoun and to be part of a great program that he built from the ground up. I got a great education at UConn and at the same time got to play a game that I love because of Coach Calhoun. Coach Calhoun and his coaching staff helped me both on the court and in the classroom.
Most importantly, they taught me life skills to become a man. I don’t think I’ll ever play for a coach that keeps pushing his student athletes to become the best they coud be. He is a great coach and a great motivator.”
