in UConn Football

Here’s a rundown of what the Huskies are up against in 2010:
9/04/2010 – Connecticut at Michigan 3:30PM ET
The Huskies make their first ever trip to the Big House.  A win in Ann Arbor could set the tone for what could be a very special season.

9/11/2010 – Texas Southern at Connecticut  12pm ET
Hey, everyone plays one FCS Team.  Some even play two (Ehem, Rutgers).

9/18/2010 – Connecticut at Temple 12pm ET
Dangerous game.  Temple should compete for the MAC Championship this season, and the Huskies have had their struggles with Al Golden’s Owls recently.  UConn narrowly defeated Temple in 2007 and 2008.

9/25/2010 – Buffalo at Connecticut TBA
Rematch of the January 3rd, 2009 International Bowl, which UConn won 38-20.  Donald Brown’s final game as a Husky…261 yards rushing.

10/02/2010 – Vanderbilt at Connecticut TBA
The Huskies lost at Vandy during the program’s infancy in 2002, 28-24.  Vanderbilt will become the first SEC team to visit the Rent.

10/08/2010 – Connecticut at Rutgers 7:30PM ET
UConn is 4-4 vs Rutgers since 2001.

10/23/2010 – Connecticut at Louisville TBA
The Huskies have won the last three meetings with the Cardinals.

10/29/2010 – West Virginia at Connecticut 8PM ET
UConn is still looking for it’s first ever win over the Mountaineers.

11/11/2010 – Pittsburgh at Connecticut 7:30PM ET
The Huskies are 3-3 vs Pitt since joining the Big East in 2004.

11/20/2010 – Connecticut at Syracuse TBA
UConn is 4-2 vs Syracuse since joining the Big East, and has won the last three meetings.

11/27/10 – Cincinnati at Connecticut TBA
The Huskies downed Cincy 40-16 the last time they visited the Rent (2008).

12/04/10 – Connecticut at South Florida TBA
The road team has yet to win a game in this series…3-3 All-time…

Let's hear it…how do you arrive at that number Mr. Hopkins?

Well, I am very much being an optimist here but I am feeling a break out year.

Beating Michigan is key to the break out year. 1-0

Off the momentum of the victory in the Big House the Huskies roll with three convincing victories over Texas Southern, Temple and Buffalo. 4-0

The huskies follow this up with another win over an SEC opponent and enter Big East play at 5-0.

Rising in the polls and feeling a bit over confident the pups stumble at Rutgers 6-1.

With 15 days off the squad regroups and refocuses to win at Louisville and the next week finally gets the WV monkey off their back. 8-1.

The huskies are then unable to avenge last years loss at Pitt losing another close one to the Panthers. 8-2.

Cuse gets crushed, the Cincy disaster from last year IS avenged and UConn wins a close one down in Florida. 10-2

I like it, and don't disagree with a lot. That game down at South Florida will be huge…that's another monkey by the way…the Huskies have never won at Tampa. Michigan is going to be much improved this year, I think. Tough place to open…Edsall has never beaten Rich Rodriguez. The Huskies have had their issues with mobile QBs, but with the new blitzing schemes we saw at WVU and vs South Carolina…I think we figured something out. 10-2,9-3ish…I'm onboard with that. So you've got us at 5-2 in the Big East, which probably doesn't win the conference outright…so, are you predicting the Huskies to win the title, or a close miss?

Okay, I'll go game by game :

@ Michigan loss 0-1.
Wins over Texas Southern, Temple, Buffalo and Vandy 4-1
@ Rutgers, win. The Huskies are due to pull one of these out. 5-1
@ the Ville, win. 6-1
Home vs WVU…This has to be the year…I have to believe that 7-1.
Home vs Pitt – Booyah, we're rolling now, 8-1.
@ Cuse – win. Closer than I'd like. 9-1
Home vs Cincy…win. We'll see what Cincy looks like after Kelly. 10-1
@ USF Loss. Dang it! 10-2.

There we have it…it's a little bold, and optimistic, but it's not unrealistic. 6-1 should win the conference…sure, why not us?

My head says 10-2, my heart says 11-1. Explanation below.

@ Michigan–Win. UConn comes out and debuts the Moorehead spread in year two, blowing it open in the 2nd half, 33-21. 1-0

vs Texas Southern. No question. Not close, 45-10. 2-0.

@ Temple–Win. Not easy. UConn has a bit of a letdown after the first two games. Wins 24-16 after a late fg pretties up the corpse. 3-0

vs Buffalo–Win. Not close. UConn is better than the bowl team two years ago. Buffalo is not; 41-13. 4-0.

vs Vandy–Win. Too much unrest and turmoil down there. Their coach seems like a great guy and his kids will play hard but they aren't able to come up to the Rent and win. 31-20. 5-0

@ Rutgers–Win. The place will be rocking but this reminds me of the Friday game at Louisville a few years back. A big turnover by the defense closes the deal late. 27-24. 6-0

@ Louisville–Win. The 'Ville is better than last year but not much. They play hard but don't have enough to win. 27-17. 7-0

vs WVU–Win. Finally. They have been close the last two years (yes, I know the last game at the Rent ended up a blow out but oh, how close…). 33-28 8-0

vs Pitt–Loss. Sorry to say it but Pitt has the horses. They are darn good. The crowd is amazing and it isn't a blow out but UConn just can't stop the Panthers on this night who should have it all working by this time of the season. 38-27. 8-1

@ Cuse–Win. Jim Brown isn't walking through that door. Donovan McNabb is not walking through that door. Dwight Freeney…you get the picture. 34-14 9-1

vs Cincy–Loss. Different coach, a lot of weapons. Outstanding qb. The fans begin to jump ship. (FWIW, in my heart I feel they win this game but my head says otherwise…) Low scoring, bad weather game. 17-16. 9-2

@ USF–Win. USF typically fades late, UConn finishes strong. Skip Holtz imagines what could have been. 21-17. 10-2.

UConn spends bowl week with Mickey and Co.

I have 4-1 OOC and 5-2 in league play. 9-3 and God knows what bowl. I will say this, I will be more surprised if we go 8-4 than I’ll be with 10-2. And 11-1 is not out of the question.

I think we’ll go 8-4 or most likely 7-5. We go 3-2 in OOC with losses to Michigan and Vandy. In the Big East, we go 4-3 with losses to West Virginia, Rutgers and USF. At least we won’t go to the Pizza Bowl this year. I’m excited to kick off the season!

Losing to Vandy Jim? At home to boot? Why do you say that?

South Florida won at Memorial Stadium in 1999. 10-2 (5-2) losses to USF and Pitt.
