Day One in the Books

Kinnard is seeing time at WR

So day one is in the books and we’ve got a couple of answers, at least in the short term.  Leon Kinnard was lined up at WR.  I like it.  I’m picturing step back WR screens so Leon can catch the ball in space and make people miss.  Kid is an electrifying athlete.   I was worried about Kinnard’s career after he broke his leg his senior year in high school, but the staff stuck by Leon and it looks like it’s about to pay dividends.  The staff says he’s still a QB, which is fine, they can list him however they want, but I think it’s safe to say we’ll see Leon lining up at different positions this season.   Kid is too good not to see the field in some capacity.

Mike Lang is indeed still at safety, and Chip Malafronte of the Register noted that Edsall was impressed by his play yesterday.   St. Paul Catholic (Bristol) Freshman Byron Jones drew high praise as well.

Edsall is taking over the safeties

Speaking of Edsall, Randy has decided to personally coach the safeties this preseason.   Edsall coached the d-backs for Tom Coughlin in Jacksonville, so he’s certainly got the credentials, but this does worry me to a certain extent.  I’m glad our coach is going to take a hands on approach to fix the teams biggest weakness, but I’m worried that the situation is so bad that three weeks isn’t going to be enough time to fix it.

Anyone else impressed every time they hear DJ Shoemate speak?  Dude is media savvy and says all the right things.  Check out John Silver’s piece on Shoemate…good stuff.  I’ve said it before, but I’ll reiterate…thrilled with the Shoemate addition.   He’s powerfully built and I think a perfect compliment to Jordan Todman’s running style.  I think he’s a guy that’s going to be a vocal leader, and a guy that’s going to help calm any youngsters down on September 4th in Ann Arbor.
