In baseball terms “The Golden Sombrero” is used to describe the feat of a baseball player striking out 4 times in one game. It’s quite a dubious distinction. Horse Racing gave us the term “The Triple Crown” (and baseball has been borrowing that phrase for the last century as well). Whether its horse racing or baseball the term is used to define coming in 1st place in 3 separate races or achievements. Tennis and Golf give us the term “The Grand Slam” (as does baseball once again). A player winning all 4 events in one year is considered to have completed the Grand Slam.
Well don’t look now but the University of Connecticut Athletic Department does have some kind of reasonable or outside chance (depending on how much you like to dream) to complete the Grand Slam in Major D1 NCAA sports for 2011. Has anyone ever done it? I don’t think so! Does anyone even talk about it as a real thing? Probably not! Does UConn have a shot to accomplish it and perhaps rename it or maybe more appropriately name it for the 1st time – “The Husky Slam”…yup it’s a possibility.
The 3 major college sports are Football, Basketball (Men’s and Women’s) and then yes with a precipitous drop off in national viewership – baseball. They do actually broadcast the college world series from Omaha every year on ESPN and CBS.
Step 1. Participate in a BCS bowl game in football. Mission accomplished with the huskies trip to the Fiesta Bowl game.
Steps 2 and 3. Men’s and Women’s basketball programs reach the Final 4. Geno’s gals seem to be a lock. Jimmy’s group of young pups look better and better each week. Stay healthy, continue the maturation process and hope for a good seeding and the Uconn Athletic Department could be 3/4 of the way there.
Step 4. Baseball – Last year the Huskies spent the majority of the season in the Top 25 and were awarded a regional bid in Norwich. This year’s team is ranked 14th in one pre season poll and 16th in another. The entire Big East Pitching rotation is back. The Huskies have 2 of the top 10 draft prospects of all of college baseball. (3 of the Top 50 as well).
So there you have it – If basketball and baseball can finish what the football team already accomplished in Glendale, AZ then perhaps the 2011 Uconn Huskies from the aforementioned sports will be responsible for “The Husky Slam” as it may be known from here on out.
Its the middle of January, its snowing AGAIN!! The news around Uconn athletics has been negative in the recent hours with Mr. Burton blowing his top and it was time for all of Husky Nation to feel a little better about 2011 and what it can still accomplish with or without Mr.Burton’s checkbook. Do you have a better name for the accomplishment besides ‘The Husky Slam’?
