Good 2010 recruiting class but so far 2011 looks dim What's up is coach losing his touch?

Sal I agree with you! Possibly this weekend we may score another recruit.

I know of one recruit coming from Iowa (Kiah Stokes). Have you heard of any others?

Lewis, Banks, Stokes–whose losing his touch. With 4 scholarships to give, he got three of the very best for 2011/2012. Got some excellent verbals for 2012/13. What I am disappointed about it the Walker–who never really wanted Uconn /wanted Kentuck. And the two bench warmers. Either they are Uconn kind of players or they are not. If they are play them, if not tell them to transfer–and get recruits to replace them. Like Smith who pulled her commit to UVA..

He signed 5 for 2010 and has three of the top 100 for 2011. One of the 3 is the top rated player in the class. Lets be realistic, recruiting in women's hoop is becoming much more competitive. How spoiled have we become!

It's not just about having all the skills developed when they get there. What makes Geno so good is his ability to recognize raw talent that he can mold to fit the needs of the program. If I remember correctly that's what great coaches do.

the reason for uconns success is the recruiters. they should get the credit. if auriemma didnt get the best players in the country he would be a nobody. when youre given the best players you better win. he shows them nothing . they know how to dribble, pass and shoot. basketball is a reaction game. moving the ball around waiting for an open shot, wow what a concept. if hes so good, lets see him coach say an ivy league team or some lowly div one team and make them champs. it wouldnt happen. what do you think his players learn when they beat teams by forty points. and is ego wont let him sit anyone down. he wants the glory. as for playing the right players. remember they are on scholarships, so they have to play. theyre given free rides so auriemma can look like a genius. i give more credit to a girl on a weak team who is a leading scorer in the country,. big deal they never lose. theyre just talent laden. nothing to do with auriemma.

Guy you are out of your mind. Of course it is about the talent but without direction that talent will only go so far. You are obviously a Geno hater and are not looking at this very clearly. He sets the tone and gets them to play/execute his philosophy. There is a huge reason why a bad Uconn program has gotten so good and that common factor is Geno. You must be a soccer mom! The stuff about not playing kids, come on it is D1 athletics not youth sports. Of course he wants the best players, he wants to win. You really need to stop hating and realize how good Geno is as a coach and recruiter.

Ed Kramer January 29, 2011 at 6:41 pm

You sound like a Tenn fan that has been overshadowed in the last ten years.Fat Pat reminds me of the Syracuse crybaby, can't get all her wantabe's so she stops playing and getting beaten by Uconn year in and year out.

DrJohn40 February 20, 2011 at 8:00 am

Mike, if you ever played a college level team sport, you would know that talent alone doesn't do it. Coaching makes a huge difference. If you look at Hoopgurlz top recruiting classes over the last 5 years, not once did UConn have the top class. If you think the almost game to game improvement of Stef Dolson had nothing to do with coaching, you are missing a critical part of how players grow individually, and as members of a great team. Do you honestly think just letting them loose on the floor without a coach is going to create a championship team? It sounds like you just don't like Coach A for some reason.

Dr. M Blosveren February 23, 2011 at 1:07 pm

Of all the many postings I have read this is by far the most IGNORANT, TAINTED, and clearly HATEFUL ones I have been unfortunate to be exposed to. Did this guy ever hear what the former players think of their Coach?? Ask Tina Charles how she was transformed by him or Renee Montgomery, Etc Etc. You would not by any chance be from the envious state of Tennessee [which gets top recruits year after year!! Just not "D" or Maya!]. This person has a very biased, prejudiced agenda. What makes UCONN great are the second tier and other Freshman players that Auriemma trains into important pieces of the unified team concept. Prejudice, prejudice [and maybe envy] abound in this person's comments

Juan March 29, 2012 at 12:24 am

Truly written by someone who know nothing about coaching or sports for that matter. I never seen so much ignorance in one paragraph. I need a nap after reading that.

Pnuba December 19, 2010 at 5:40 pm

What!? GENO may go down as one of the 20 top coaches in the history off all sports!—you are a nobody!

Mike , get ur head out of the sand, and why do you want to display ur ignorance here? When Geno came to UConn, they probably were on a par with the an Ivy League team ( or possibly below that level.) He is responsible for molding their program into what it is today. Tenn, Duke, NC, La Tech, Old Dominion' to name a few, were the premier teams and recruiters of that era and UConn was struggling in the Yankee Conference. Now Geno gets excellent recruits, as the aforementioned schools, but he fine tunes their talents and blends them into a team. One of the greatest coaches ever…

If geno went to harvard he would have the number 1 team in 2-3 years. I went to uconn and he has built something special. It is all him. If summit left tenn it would be done as top program. Women want to go to best schools, duke, Stanford, Texas, unc. Otherwise they want best coach, and he is it. Recruiting is everything and he is the best. I don’t think it is an insult to be best recruiter. It took him 5-8 years to build up uconn, cut that in half at least if he went anywhere else now. Any school, pick it. East Carolina, depaul, Fairfield, whatever. Unfortunately for hatred he has 20 more years easy.

the new class had better have some serious scorers. the loss of Moore and Hayes is a dismal prospect. Why does Gino recruit a guard like Loren Dixon who may be fast but is often out of control and can't score? Stephanie Dolson has great hands and post moves but can't jump. And poor Heather Buck has been a non-factor. I think the team may be in deep weeds next year.

Reply

DrJohn40 February 8, 2011 at 11:01 pm

Kara Wolters couldn't jump and wasn't recruited that heavily. Yet she did quite well. You can see Dolson improving with every game. She is already a great passer, is almost automatic at the free throw line, and gaining in confidence. I think for a kid who can't jump, she is going to have a great career at UConn.

hello : doty comes back, dolson and hartly are back tiffany hayes is a jr. also plus the 3 new recruits will be there well in the final four again just dont think they have enough to win it this year becouse of the heshe in baylor

Will February 3, 2011 at 1:12 pm

Hayes has one more year and Caroline Doty will be back., so they will have plenty of leadership on the court. Bria Hartley and Kelly Faris will be asked do more scoring but the freshmen coming in will play significant minutes next year. Mosqueda-Lewis can score with anyone and Banks is solid. Kiah Stokes will be a big help inside as well.

For the first time in quite awhile I was disappointed in the coaching during the ND game. It was obvious to me, and I'm sure to ND as well, that no one was even looking to take a shot but Maya. One person couldn't, even if it's MM, lead them to victory. I was disappointed in the effort of both Dolson, Faris and Hartley. I thought they should have been more offensive minded. All ND had to do was guard MM to win this game. I don't think Geno can count on Doty next year. She'll probably get injured again and put them in a bind.

DrJohn40 February 8, 2011 at 11:08 pm

The class of 2011 has a scorer in Mosqueda-Lewis. And with Breanna heading up the 2012 class, the future looks good. I remember thinking that it would be a long time before we see someone as good as Taurasi, but then Maya Moore comes along. Geno isn't rebuiding, just re-stocking. It's all good.

a large prcentage of the WNBA are former UCONN players. This fact alone shows talent and coaching

I just read that all of next years incoming freshman have been named McDonalds All Americans. They will all be on the West team, we will have a chance to see them play in the game. I think it takes place at the end of March. I remember the days when there wasn't a single McDonalds All American on the team. Maya's graduation leaves a big hole, but UConn will still be in the race for another final four. And UConn is off to a great start with the verbals for the 2012 class!!

Any word on whether UCONN is recruiting Rachel Hollivay , a 6'4 post , out of Mississippi for 2012 ? The No.3 rated player in the class. I read where UCONN had Jefferson on campus a couple months ago. She is rated No.2 in 2012 class. Whats the chance of Geno going 1-2-3 for 2012 ?

Ted Ogorzalek March 25, 2011 at 10:24 am

Bria Smith from Christ the King rated #8 received her release from Virginia due to the retirement of Debbie Ryan. She is a guard and with UCONN relationship with Christ the King, will UCONN make an offer to her?

Reply

Will March 29, 2011 at 12:42 pm

If we can sign Bria Smith and maybe Moriah Jefferson we wont need to recruit another guard for three years. We already have Bria Hartley and Brianna Banks along with Kelly Faris and Caroline Doty who has two more years of eligibility. Our guard rotation would be the best in the country and Geno can press all day if needed.

2011-12 looks good. with doty, dolson, farris, hartley and hayes returning don't sound the huskies out just yet. they will compete for big east and national honors. lewis is the real deal along with the rest of a very good recruiting class. should johnson emerge healthy and stronger the huskies will have talent, experience, athleticism and depth. what more could any team want? they could well be better next year. you heard it first here. i am oliver the basketball sage of rocky hill,ct. i have spoken.

Is UCONN interested in Bria Smith? She's got a visit scheduled with Tenn and I'd hate to see her lost to the Vols. Now that she backed-off her Virgina commitment, I would think Geno and company would be interested in this Christ the King standout. She was going to Virgina with Geno's blessing, so there must have been some type of relationship there. She'd be a super addition!!!

I felt bad that uconn was not in the finals but maya got no help and the loss of one big was to much I hope the girls that recruited fit the uconn program and geno don't let others change your style

Frank April 18, 2011 at 10:11 am

Notre Dame had too many options, more talented than Uconn. Gtown showed them how to take Dolson out of the game (but not next year). Hayes a non factor in too many games–a big, big game her and there but you could not count on her. Faris had her legs run ragged, no real help for her on defense. Maya gave it her all an then added another hundred–super performance. If Geno keeps recruiting players who cannot play and who occupy bench space–he's going to be losing more than he wins. He's the greatest coach ever, but he is full of predjuices and it hurts the team. Engelin and JOhnson are going to transfer this summer.

A lot of unknown talent out there still for the 2012 class. Too bad Coach didn't look at a strong 3,4, in 6'-1" Lauren Graham, at Cherryville High, in North Caroilna. Looks like one of the Big South Conference schools will pick her up unless the bigger conferences take a look at her. She'll be with her NC Flight Elite, 17u, team in Murfreesboro, TN, "Battle in the Boro" July 13-16th.

Aliyah Jeune uses a combination of intelligence, size and shooting ability to make her a solid scoring threat. At 6-0, she is considered by many as the top women's player in the country. Aliyah is following in the footsteps of the rich and storied tradition of the NY Gauchos. Recently, Gauchos guard Briyona Canty, the No. 6 player in the Class of 2011 according to ESPN, committed to Rutgers University. Aliyah is a scoring machine that can attack the basket from all angles. At such a young age, she is being compared to UCONN's Maya Moore.

Can someone tell me the full women's basketball roster for 2011-2012? Did Geno finally end up using his fourth scholarship? Or did he graduate 3 and only add on 4? Are we stuck with the kind of bench that stole the 3rd champtionship away from Maya?
